10/12 - Crosley Field - GAME #4
Mets 4, Reds 3
Mark Bomback and Gene "no relation to Marge" Schott dueled each other for 7 innings of 1 run ball. Neither hurler factored into the decision, but both battled hard and had almost identical linescores. Cincy broke a scoreless deadlock with a 2 out pinch hit single by Alex Kampouris that scored Frank McCormick. The Mets would show their resolve and answer right back with an RBI single from Doug Flynn in the top of the 7th. Both teams would score 2 runs each in the 8th, so the game remained tied heading into the 9th. Joel Youngblood led off the top of the frame with a clean single to center. Flynn bunted him over to second, but pinch hitter Trevino looked to be a rally killer with a cheap ground out to second. Frank Taveras strolled to the plate with 2 outs and the world on his shoulders. New York's speedy shortstop delivered with a Texas Leaguer to right to score Youngblood easily. Neil Allen started the 9th needing 3 outs to save the game and tie the series. He did just that, but not before giving the fans back in the Big Apple a good case of agiata. Allen walked the lead off man, Hafey then gave up a clean single to Hub Walker to put runners on 1st & 2nd. Goodman ripped a bullet to short that Taveras had to catch in order to save his very existence. Lombardi tried to pull an outside fastball and popped up to Jorgensen at first for the second out and when Charlie Gelbert grounded weakly to third to end the game the Amazin's now found themselves in a tied up series.
Series tied at 2-2
