10/8 - Shea Stadium - GAME #1
Reds 5, Mets 1
Fans filed out of the 7 train like cattle exiting a boxcar as the Mets reached the KOD NLCS for the first time in franchise history. Ray Burris (4-3, 3.50) found the ball in his shoe and the shaving cream on his stool when he entered the clubhouse. Lee Grissom (7-1, 1.98) would be one tough opponent for Burris, who early on began to show signs of fatigue from a long season where he logged many innings. Ernie "the Schnozz" Lombardi singled home Hub Walker in the top of the 1st to get the Reds on the board early. 3 huge runs in third put Burris and the Mets further behind the 8-ball. With one out Ival Goodman triple off the 396 marker on the right center field fence. Lombardi came through with his second RBI single to make it 2-0. Chick Hafey's two run homer made it 4-0, which was more than enough run support for Grissom. Lombardi would single another run home in the 4th to make it 5-0. New York would break Grissom's shutout in the 9th when Doug Flynn singled home Jerry Morales with 1 out. Burris was his own worst enemy today as he issued 7 free passes and 9 hits in just 7 innings of work.
Cincinnati leads the series 1-0
