Pittsburgh put a lot of pressure on the Metsies by taking 3 of 4 from the
Philthies. After losing the opener the Bucs rattled off 3 straight wins to have
the inside track to the division title. MVP candidate Ralph Kiner (top left
picture) did not hit a homer in this series. Speculation is that Philly manager
Ryan pitched around him and challenged guys like Wally Westlake (top right
picture) and Hank Greenberg (middle picture) to do the damage. Both came through
in the final 3 games with flying colors. In game 2 Greenberg was 2 for 4 with 2
RBI's. Westlake went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. Greenberg hit his 7th homer of the
season in game 3 and had 3 RBI's, while Kiner had a triple to go along with 2
singles. In that game Curt Schilling gave up 5 runs in 7 innings of work and all
but conceded his longshot bid for the NL Cy Young Award. In game 4 Greenberg hit
his 8th homer of the season and had 2 RBI's as the Bucs punched their ticket to
the post season with a record of 24-14. Now they have to wait around to see how
the Mets/Cubs series goes to see if they are division champs or Wild Card
winners.
