The 1980 Chicago Cubs hosted the 2000 Philadelphia Phillies in the opening series of KOD 11, as another glorious season of KOD 11 was about to begin on the northside of Chicago.
Game 1 – Cubs 5, Phillies 0
Perfect weather for game 1 as the Cubs sent the old warhorse, Rick Reuschel to the mound to face the Phils, Bruce Chen. Philadelphia would out hit the Cubs, 9 to 8, but 3 double plays turned by the Cubs would get Reuschel out of trouble and Rick would go on to shut out the Phils, 5-0. Ivan DeJesus and Lenny Randle led the Cubs, both going 2 for 4 with Randle poking in the basket in right center in the 5th to key the Cubs win.
Game 2 - Cubs 4, Phillies 1
Lynn McGlothen would toss the win for the Cubs and "Big Dick" Tidrow got his first save as Chicago beat the Phils, 4-1. McGlothen would give up 6 hits over his 7 innings of work, while Dave Kingman and Jerry Martin spearheaded the Cubs, both hitting home runs. Philadelphia did not score their first run of the year until the 6th inning, going 14 scoreless innings to start off the year.
Game 3 – Cubs 8, Phillies 6
The series moved back to Philadelphia for games 3 and 4. Cliff Politte for the Phils and Mike Krukow was handed the ball for the Cubs. The Cubs took a commanding 7-1 lead to the bottom of the 7th. Philadelphia pounded the Cubs for 5 runs in the 7th to get back in the game, but Chicago answered with an insurance run in the 8th. Dick Tidrow got credit for a hold, as he shut down the Phils in the 8th and Bruce Sutter came in, in the 9th for his first save as Chicago win, 8-6.
Game 4 – Phillies 6, Cubs 5
Dennis Lamp for Chicago and Curt Schilling for Philly took the mound against each other in game 4. The Cubs were looking to sweep and although the game was exciting it would be the Phillies who would prevail in an 11 inning ,6-5 win. Chicago would battle from 4 runs down to take a 5-4 in the top of the 8th only to have Philadelphia tie in the bottom half. Scott Rolen would smack one off the wall in left to score the game winner for Philly as the salvaged a game from the Cubs.
