The 1991 edition of the Houston Astros would be successful if they were built on pitching, speed and defense playing in the Astrodome. Unfortunately only the speed looks promising. Steve Finely (34 steals) leads a group of 5 players w/ double digit thefts. Up and coming Stars Jeff Bagwell 139 OPS+, C Craig Biggio 113, Luis Gonzalez 117, Finley 113 and Ken Caminiti 101 all play above league average and will produce enough runs to keep the less than spectacular SP staff in some games.
Led by 4th year Starter Pete Harnisch having his 2nd best MLB season (12-9 2.70) and 22 year old Rookie Daryl Kile (7-11 3.69) the rest of the staff barely contributes 3/4 of league average. Luckily the bullpen is near league average, led by future ace Curt Schilling, Al Osuna and Dwayne Henry. They will likely hold the lead for any quality starts we manage to pitch.
The middle of the infield is in shambles and offensively and defensively will lose more games than any other spot on the roster. Rookie Andujar Cedeno, Veteran Rafael Ramirez and Eric Yelding contribute a WAR of -3.5.
In summary, expect the Astros to have a chance to win with their top two starters and hope to outslug other weak pitching when our weak pitching starts in the BAD League - hopefully a formula for a chance at decent showing.
