1982 saw the Twins leave the great outdoors of Metropolitan Stadium to play indoor baseball at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The team started the season at 16-54 and quickly established themselves as the worst team in baseball. The young squad lead by Tom Brunansky (21), Kent Hrbek (22), & Gary Gaetti (23) would turn it around in the second half finishing 44-48 but still managed to finish last in the division with a 60-102 record. Minnesota’s lone All-Star representative in 1982, Kent Hrbek, made $40,000 for the season playing 1B for the Twins.
Bobby Castillo would pace the staff with a 13-11 record and a very respectable 3.66 ERA. Unfortunately for the Twins he would be the only starter who would have a sub 4.00 ERA. A young, but raw Frank Viola fresh off the campus of St. John's University in Jamaica, finished 4-10 with a 5.21 ERA and gave little indication as to the star performer that he would be in just a few short seasons. Ron Davis (dad of Ike) was a shaky closer at best. Davis saved 22, but sported a terrible 3-9 recorded with a bloated 4.42 ERA. He was obviously out of his element as the prime closer after spending years in New York setting up for Goose Gossage.
