1987 San Diego Padres – 65-97

87Padres

The 1987 Padres will start the new year with youth in the field and the dugout. Larry Bowa will take the helm of a team in transition.  Benito Santiago will be handling the pitching staff and expectations are high for this young backstop. Hitting ace John Kruk will patrol left field and first base.  Joey Cora is expected to handle the second base chores. With Cora's speed, the Padres appear primed for stealing a lot of bases.  The big change came when the Padres traded slugger Kevin McReynolds and lefty reliever Gene Walter to the Mets for young players. Kevin Mitchell will play third while #1 draft choice Shawn Abner will be given a chance to play in the outfield.  Stan Jefferson came along in the trade with the Mets also and will be given the center field position. Jefferson has speed and a little power and he will bat leadoff. The Padres pitchers are veteran hurlers, Eric Show, Ed Whitson, and Andy Hawkins. The Padres are expected to do very little but could be an exciting group to watch as the season progresses.
